If I recall correctly, since 400 sbc chevy blocks have siamesed cylinders; the steam holes are supposed to prevent steam pockets (air bubbles) from forming at the tops of the cylinders by providing an escape route. WebMay 27, 2006 · Definitely drill the steam holes if they aren't there already. The exhaust side holes are drilled perpendicular to the head surface, and the intake side holes are drilled at a 30* angle towards the top of the exhaust ports. I use a gasket as a template, a punch to mark the holes, and a dremel and drafting triangle to start the angled holes.
